        Contraceptive Vaginal Ring

The combines hormonal ring is a flexible ring of 54 mm diameter that releases 15 microgram of ethinyloestrodiol and 120 microgram of etornorgestrel daily (as such is the lowest dose of combined hormonal method)

        Advantages

        • Self-insertion and removal, good compliance
        • Quick reversibility

        Disadvantages

        • Expensive (around rs 700 per ring per cycle)
        • Local irritation is felt in vagina by some users (vaginitis occurs in 5%)
        • Expulsion may occur

        How is it applied?

The ring is self-inserted and kept worn in vagina for 21 days followed by a 7 day hormonal free interval, during which a withdrawal bleeding occurs. Women should not feel discomfort from the ring and should be removed for a short period of time (less than 2 hours) while it can be cleaned and replaced
